Whether recording an impact or rollover test, researchers require the highest quality cameras. In addition to placing cameras in the thick of it, certain cameras must remain at a distance in order to record every moment of the trial including how the exterior of a vehicle will respond to the impact. Along with the freedom this affords to use larger cameras comes the necessity for greater resolving power in order to compensate for the distance from the target, and although light sensitivity remains paramount, the increased control of lighting allows for additional leeway than can be expected of tighter conditions.

For these tests, IDT recommends the Y-Series.

When light is still the primary concern, IDT offers three models with ISO equivalent speeds of 6000 for mono (grayscale) needs or 2000 for color. The Y3-S1 and Y3-S2 offer larger arrays, resolving 1280x1024 pixels while the Y4-S3 resolves 1016x1016. Respectively, the cameras reach speeds of 3000, 6000 and 5100 frames per second at their maximum resolutions.

If light is plentiful, but the camera's relation to its subject must be distant, the Y5 more than doubles the possible resolution with 2336x1728 pixels and maintains a maximum resolution speed of 730 frames per second. All of the suggested cameras provide 10 bits mono and 30 bits color depth.
